Cute Kitten - Crochet Cup Coaster

Another quick and beginner-friendly project – a cup coaster. But instead of a simple circular shape, we will enhance the coaster with ears, a bow, and black yarn to mimic the kitten's whiskers.
Materials Needed
- cotton yarn, any weight and color – for the kitten coaster
- cotton yarn, any weight and color – for the kitten bow
- cotton yarn, preferably black – for the whiskers
- crochet hook suitable for your yarn
- scissors
- needle (optional, you can also use the crochet hook to make the whiskers)
I used DROPS Paris yarn in beige, pink, and black with a 3.5mm hook. The finished coaster is about 8 cm in diameter.
Abbreviations
We will work in rounds, increasing the number of stitches as we go. The pattern uses chain stitch, slip stitch, treble crochet, double crochet, and single crochet.
Kitten Coaster Pattern
Start with a magic ring, where we will work double crochets.
In the magic ring, work:
- 2 chain stitches,
- 12 double crochets,
- slip stitch in the first double crochet (this closes the first round)
Next, move to the second round, where we will increase the number of single crochets in each stitch. Work:
- 2 chain stitches,
- 2 double crochets in each stitch (increasing the round),
- slip stitch in the first double crochet (this closes the second round)
Move to the third round, where we will further increase the number of stitches. Work:
- 2 chain stitches,
- now repeat the sequence: 2 double crochets in one stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch (this increases the round)
- slip stitch in the first double crochet (this closes the third round)
The fourth round is where we create the ears. Now work:
- 1 chain stitch,
- in the next stitch: single crochet (start first ear)
- in the next stitch: double crochet
- in the next stitch: double crochet, 2 treble crochets, chain stitch, 2 treble crochets, double crochet
- in the next stitch: single crochet
- in the next stitch: double crochet (end of first ear)
- now work single crochets in the next stitches – I worked 4 single crochets, but you can adjust the number to reach the place where you want to start the second ear
- in the next stitch: single crochet (start second ear)
- in the next stitch: double crochet
- in the next stitch: double crochet, 2 treble crochets, chain stitch, 2 treble crochets, double crochet
- in the next stitch: single crochet
- in the next stitch: double crochet (end of second ear)
- now work single crochets in the next stitches to reach back to the start of the first ear
- slip stitch (closing the fourth – last round)
Great, you’ve created the kitten-shaped cup coaster! You can use it as is, or add some details to make it even cuter – a bow and whiskers.

Finishing
To attach the kitten’s bow – place it in the desired spot, then pull the yarn tails to the back. Tie a knot to secure, and trim any excess yarn.
When placing the bow, choose a spot that will not interfere with placing a cup on the coaster.
To make whiskers, thread yarn onto a needle and pull it through where you want the whiskers.
If you don’t have a needle, you can grab the yarn with the crochet hook – from the top and bottom – and weave it in place.
That’s really it – congratulations! You’ve made an adorable kitten cup coaster. May it brighten your daily coffee or tea breaks.
