Free Crochet Gauge Calculator – get your stitch count right every time
Every crochet pattern lists a gauge. Something like: 20 stitches and 24 rows = 10 cm. But what does that actually mean for your yarn, your hook, and your hands? That's where a gauge calculator comes in.
Why gauge matters
Gauge - sometimes called tension - is the number of stitches and rows you get per centimetre (or inch) of fabric. Two crocheters working from the same pattern with the same yarn can end up with pieces that are several centimetres apart in size. That's completely normal. It just means your tension is different.
For accessories like scarves and bags, a slight difference is often fine. For garments, blankets with planned dimensions, or anything that needs to fit, getting the gauge right is the difference between a finished object you love and one that goes in the frogging pile.
"Frogging" means unravelling your work - named after the sound a frog makes: rip-it, rip-it.
What is a gauge swatch?
A gauge swatch is a small sample piece you crochet before starting your project. You use the same yarn, hook, and stitch pattern you plan to use for the real thing.
How to make a gauge swatch:
- Chain about 20 stitches (a few more than you need to measure)
- Work in your stitch pattern for at least a few rows (ideally 10–15)
- Fasten off and lay the swatch flat - don't stretch it
- Using a ruler, measure a 10 cm section in the centre of the swatch (not at the edges - they can distort)
- Count how many stitches fit in that 10 cm
- Count how many rows fit in a 10 cm height
Those numbers are your gauge.
How to use the free gauge calculator
The free crochet gauge calculator takes the maths out of the equation entirely. No app to install, no sign-up — just an online gauge calculator you can use straight from your phone while you crochet.
- Measure your swatch and note its width, height, stitch count, and row count
- Enter those numbers into the calculator - it immediately shows your gauge per 10 cm (or per 4 inches if you prefer)
- Enter your project dimensions - the width and height from your pattern or the size you want to make
- The calculator tells you exactly how many stitches to cast on and how many rows to work
No manual arithmetic, no mistakes, no mystery.
The calculator works in both centimetres and inches. Toggle the unit at the top.
What if my gauge doesn't match the pattern?
If your gauge is different from the pattern's gauge, you have two options:
- Change your hook size. Too many stitches per 10 cm → go up a hook size. Too few → go down a hook size. Then swatch again.
- Use the calculator to adapt. Enter the project's finished dimensions into the calculator. It will give you your stitch and row counts based on your gauge - so the finished size matches even if your tension is different.
Beginner tip: swatching is not wasted time
It can feel like swatching slows you down. But a 20-minute swatch can save you hours of ripping out a finished object that came out the wrong size. Think of it as a preview - and once you're happy with the gauge, you can often incorporate the swatch into the project itself.
