My First Crochet Kit
For a long time I wanted to try crafting. Creating something "from nothing" gives you an incredible sense of satisfaction. I love building projects from scratch, putting effort into them and paying attention to detail. That's why I decided to give crocheting a try.
What drew me to crochet
With crochet you can make things that are genuinely practical and useful in everyday life. One of my first projects was a simple circle crocheted as a trivet for hot pots - and it's still going strong! There are so many practical projects like that. And every single one of them can be shared with the people you love ♥
My first crochet kit
To start crocheting, you really need less than €3. All it takes is your first skein of yarn (in your favourite colour) and a hook. I started with DROPS Paris cotton yarn in colour #20 Blush and a 3.5 mm hook. Scissors are also handy - but I'm sure everyone has a pair at home. Here's what my starter kit cost:
- yarn – €1.10
- aluminium crochet hook 3.5 mm – €0.80
- shipping – €1.80
total: €3.70 (without shipping: €1.90)

What to look out for
I recommend starting with thicker yarn. It makes everything so much easier - no need to worry about tiny details, because every stitch is clearly visible. You might also consider crocheting with 5 mm cotton rope. It's a really chunky "yarn" that makes it easy to spot your stitches and see the difference between a half double crochet and a double crochet.
My first project
As I mentioned - what I love about crochet is that you can make things you actually use every day. Think trivets, cosmetic bags, blankets, even poufs! But for my very first project I chose a heart-shaped keychain for my loved one. I felt such joy from making my first finished object and being able to give it to someone special.
Struggles at the beginning
At the start, the biggest challenge was getting a feel for yarn tension. Sometimes my stitches came out too loose, sometimes too tight. I had to frog (unravel) my work many times - but that's probably an unavoidable part of crochet. Be prepared for it :)
A tip for beginners
Buy yarn in your favourite colour - ideally a light one. Dark colours make it really hard to see individual stitches, which makes crocheting much trickier. And a favourite colour, well - it simply makes you happy ;)
Summary - what to buy to start crocheting?
If you're just beginning, buy:
- one skein of yarn,
- a hook that matches the yarn
That's it. With this kit you can start your first projects. Give it a go and see if it's for you. If you're just starting your crochet journey, this simple setup is more than enough.
